Field-Sequential PMVA Displays

Use Cases
  • Premium appliance control panels
  • Branded indoor instrument clusters
  • Smart-home thermostat and HVAC displays
  • Audio and lifestyle product UIs
  • Custom industrial operator panels

Field-Sequential PMVA delivers multi-color segments on a deep-black background using an RGB backlight and a specialized IC per segment — a custom-branded look no off-the-shelf LCD can match.

Polytronix makes custom Field-Sequential PMVA (FS-PMVA) displays — combining an RGB backlight with vertical-alignment cells and a per-segment IC to drive multi-color segments on a deep-black background, with internal capacitive touch options, for premium appliances and indoor branded UIs.

Overview

Field-Sequential (FS) displays let product teams engage end users with a variety of colors directly on the LCD. FS technology achieves different colors per segment by combining an RGB backlight with a specialized IC that drives each segment in sync with red, green, and blue backlight phases. The result is per-segment color from a single passive-matrix LCD, with the segment IC and backlight sequencing handled at the module level.

Because FS displays operate in positive mode by default, they are best suited to indoor applications where ambient light is controlled. All FS designs are custom, allowing the segment artwork, color assignments, and IC programming to be tailored to the host product. When paired with Polytronix's proprietary PMVA cell — the FS-PMVA configuration — the display combines RGB-backlit multi-color segments with PMVA's deep-black background, wide viewing cone, and enhanced contrast. Internal capacitive touch and conventional touch-panel options can be integrated for complete operator-interface assemblies.

FS-PMVA is the platform of choice for product teams who want a differentiated, multi-color UI on a deep-black background without the cost or driver complexity of a TFT-LCD — premium appliances, smart-home controls, branded audio products, and indoor industrial operator panels are all common targets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes FS-PMVA field-sequential color LCDs?
Polytronix makes custom Field-Sequential PMVA (FS-PMVA) displays. FS technology achieves different colors per segment by combining an RGB backlight with a specialized IC that drives each segment in sync with red, green, and blue backlight phases, giving per-segment color from a single passive-matrix LCD. Paired with Polytronix's proprietary PMVA cell, it adds a deep-black background, wide viewing cone, and enhanced contrast.
How does FS-PMVA get multiple colors without a TFT?
Polytronix's FS-PMVA uses an RGB backlight whose color phases are driven in sync with a specialized IC that individually controls each segment — producing multi-color segments on a single passive-matrix display without the cost or driver complexity of a TFT-LCD. FS operates in positive mode by default, so FS-PMVA is best suited to indoor applications where ambient light is controlled.
What products is FS-PMVA best for?
Polytronix targets FS-PMVA at premium appliance control panels, smart-home thermostat and HVAC displays, branded indoor instrument clusters, audio and lifestyle product UIs, and custom industrial operator panels — product teams who want a differentiated multi-color UI on a deep-black background without the cost or driver complexity of a TFT-LCD. Every FS-PMVA module is custom-engineered.
Can FS-PMVA include touch and cover-glass lamination?
Yes. Polytronix supports internal capacitive touch directly on the LCD as well as conventional resistive and capacitive touch panels for full operator-interface assemblies. FS-PMVA modules can also be optically bonded with LOCA or OCA to cover glass for a flush appearance, improved contrast, and durable indoor operator interfaces, built under AS9100D and ISO 9001.
